What do Osteoporosis and Graves Disease Have
in Common?

Both are common women's diseases.  Osteoporosis often occurs in
menopausal women due to a lack of estrogen.  Estrogen protects the
bone, so in osteoporosis, bone becomes weak and can fracture
(break) easily.  It is the bone breaks of osteoporosis that can lead the
disease to be come chronic and disabling.

Grave's disease is also known as hyperthyroidism.  Though not all
hyperthyroidism is Grave's, this is the most common reason for the
thyroid to become hyper (over) active.  Graves disease occurs when
the immune system causes the thyroid gland to malfunction and
secreat too much thyroid hormone.  When the immune system
malfunctions like this, it is called auto immunity.  This disease is more
common in women because women tend to have more active immune
systems and to develop more auto immunity.

Both diseases share a common thread of breaking down and
weakening bone.
